I was struck by Peter Chapman's comment: "IT is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."
Sounds downright Darwinian to me...one can only wonder how much of the theory of natural selection was informed by English middle-upper-middle class mating rituals.

What an interesting idea - that the theory of evolution is an interpretation of nature in terms of English middle-upper-middle class mating rituals.
