It’s generally not a good idea to concentrate on “being the Poet” rather than “writing some poems.” Because the more one thinks about “being the Poet,” the more one tends to imagine oneself gazing with piercing intelligence into the middle distance, radiating a uniquely desirable combination of wisdom and quiet humor while the wind from the sea sweeps back one’s cloak to reveal a figure slim yet powerful — a silhouette etched against the sunset’s dwindling bonfire, as . . . .
