As he admitted in an interview to mark the publication of his debut novel 10 years ago, Wood feels reviewing is merely “a long gestation, an apprenticeship” to writing fiction. His The Book Against God – narrated by an atheist son who rebels against his priest father – relied heavily on the model of Bellow’s Herzog, but lacked the American writer’s warm capaciousness. Tellingly, Wood admitted he could “write a very full negative review” of his own novel.
